Can I develop my Reachy from scrach?

I am very insterested the Reachy, but the Reachy products is too expensice for me. So I want to develop it by myself, for example, first I want to develop the hardware and software with camera, then I can use VR.

If this ideal is OK, then how can I start? Where can I find the hardware and sortware detail spec?
